Goethe´s Insider Tipp für Leipzig

Mädler Passage
Grimmaische Strasse 2-4
04109 Leipzig

Leipzig’s city centre is home to all kinds of courtyards and shopping arcades that are well worth a look. Small shops haggle for the attention of individual tastes and offer everything from delicatessen to clothing and antiques. You should definitely set foot in at least the oldest surviving one, the Mädler Passage. Not only because the magnificent view and the stately atmosphere are worthwhile, but also because another ‘historical treat’ is hidden here: Auerbachs Cellar.

The restaurant has been a household name ever since Goethe’s Faust. The great German writer himself, a young student at Leipzig University at the time, is said to have spent a free minute or two here enjoying food and drink and probably a poetic thought or two. But even long before that, it was said about the restaurant that anyone who missed it on a trip to Leipzig had never really been to Leipzig… Which would have to be proven!
