Auerbachs Keller

Goethe´s Insider Tipp für Leipzig

Mädler Passage
Grimmaische Strasse 2-4
04109 Leipzig

Leipzig’s city center is home to many courtyards and shopping arcades that are worth a visit. Small shops compete for the attention of individual tastes, offering everything from fine foods to clothing and antiques. At least take a step into the oldest preserved one, the Mädler Passage. Not only is the grand view and regal atmosphere worth it, but another “historical gem” is hidden here: Auerbachs Cellar.

Since Goethe’s Faust, the restaurant has become well-known to the public. The great German writer himself, at that time a young student at the University of Leipzig, is said to have spent many a free minute here, enjoying food and drink, and likely pondering some poetic thoughts. But even long before that, it was said that anyone who missed out on this establishment during a trip to Leipzig had never truly been to Leipzig… which remains to be proven!
