Völkerschlachtdenkmal Leipzig

Einblick in die Geschichte mit Ausblick auf ganz Leipzig

The locals’ nickname “Völki” might be misleading, as what awaits you in Wilhelm-Külz Park is a gigantic monument! The Völkerschlachtdenkmal is not only one of Leipzig’s most famous landmarks, but also one of the largest monuments in all of Europe. Built in 1913, it commemorates the decisive battle of the War of Liberation that took place exactly 100 years earlier. If you’re interested in historical military equipment, the adjacent museum offers a deeper insight into the battle.

But a visit here isn’t only for history enthusiasts: if you’re brave enough to climb the 365 steps of the monument, you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the city from a height of 91 meters! There’s also a barrier-free access option. The “Lake of Tears” at the foot of the monument adds to the unique atmosphere, making it an experience you (and your holiday photos) should not miss! For this reason, and because of the monument’s great acoustics, open-air concerts and other outdoor events are often held here.
