Founded in 1878, Leipzig Zoological Garden is one of the oldest and most species-rich zoos in the world. Almost 900 species and subspecies live in one of Leipzig’s largest visitor attractions. The zoo is based on a unique concept: species-appropriate animal husbandry, species protection, education and exciting discovery tours are combined here. This approach is intended to pave the way for the ‘zoo of the future’. The 26-hectare site includes the unique ‘Pongoland’, a great ape enclosure and Europe’s largest sloth bear population. And with the famous ‘Gondwanaland’, a fascinating tropical adventure world the size of two football pitches, a tropical rainforest is hidden in the centre of Leipzig. Since 2000, the zoo has been realising the ambitious ‘Zoo of the Future’ project and has increased its attractiveness for residents and visitors alike: The animals feel at home in their near-natural habitats and visitors experience a sensory experience of nature on their walk through the zoo. At Leipzig Zoo, you can embark on an unforgettable journey around the world – right in the centre of Germany.
