Augustusplatz is home to two of Leipzig’s musical aces up its sleeve: Firstly, the famous Gewandhaus concert hall and secondly, the centuries-old opera house! Both are undoubtedly players of international standing, with Leipzig’s opera house even being crowned with the European ‘Opera House of the Year’ award in the last century. Leipzig Opera has been home to the art of music and dance since 1693. Under the outstanding direction of Professor Ulf Schirmer, the city’s opera house today stands for a broad spectrum of musical theatre at the highest level and can therefore attract a wide audience. In the orchestra pit, the Gewandhaus Orchestra guarantees the highest musical quality. The opera’s ballet ensemble is also more than worthy of note, as it has enjoyed an excellent reputation at international level since the late ballet director Uwe Scholz. However, all these trump cards would be nothing without the excellent acoustics and the exclusively good seats – there’s something for everyone’s ears here!
